Maple Street, with its $260,000 budget, is too small to need a separate audit committee, but its Finance Committee deliberately includes one board member besides the treasurer who reviews the bank statements and reconciliations each month. That single separation of duties means no one person both controls the money and checks the money. When a duplicate vendor payment slipped through one month, the reviewing member caught it precisely because a second set of eyes was built into the process.

Even the tiniest nonprofit benefits from at least one board member other than the treasurer regularly reviewing the finances; separation of duties is a basic, low-cost safeguard. As an organization grows past roughly a million dollars in revenue or takes on significant grants, that is when a distinct audit function, independent of the finance committee, becomes worth standing up.
